Hornet in a hollow apple

Hornet tucking into an apple

I noticed this evening that a large number of the apples on a particular tree have been pecked by the birds, even thought they’re still unripe.

Various insects have taken advantage of this ground- (or skin-) breaking service.

Among these insects the most noticeable was a hornet. It was nibbling away vigorously at the sides of its walk-in feast.

When another hornet joined it and they both became restless, I decided it was time to withdraw.
