Nashi pears

Nashi pear tree

This little tree has excelled itself.

I tried one of the pears the other day and it wasn’t ripe. I’m now waiting for them to just come away in my hand and that should indicate they’re ready.

To soon and they’re hard and dry; too late and they’re mushy. (They tend to be sold too ripe in the shops.)

Just right, and each mouthful is like biting into a crisp, fine-grained honeycomb of sweet water.

I’ve never been keen on ‘normal’ pears, but these really are something special.
