Optical illusion

The other morning a bright yellow flower seemed to have opened in front of the oak tree by the house.

A daffodil?

It looked like a daffodil, which of course is nonsense in October.

Autumn crocuses, yes – there are banks beside the road right now which are more yellow than green with their blooms – but a single daffodil popping up overnight?

I put my shoes on and walked across the gravel to take a better look.

There they were, fallen yellow oak leaves caught in a shaft of bright sunlight …
