La Befana

'Befana' that landed in the garden

‘Befana’ that landed in the garden

Today is the day when Italian children wake up to find that ‘La Befana’, the good witch, has brought them sweets and presents – or a lump of coal, as appropriate.

She rides on a broomstick and comes down the chimney in the night.

This tangled noggin that I found in the flowerbed, dropped down from the big oak tree by the house, would make a good framework for a ‘Befana’ model, which should be as ugly as possible.

I wonder if the tree’s growth is in response to a clump of parasitic yellow mistletoe.
