Fire beetle

Looking over the edge

On the edge

I’d always assumed that the name of this attractive beetle came from its colour – like a fire engine, etc.

But no, it’s called that because it flies towards forest fires, mates while the fire is still burning, and lays its eggs under the bark of the burnt trees.

Its heat-seeking ability is quite a marvel, apparently.

Well, it’s a bit behind the times here because our forest fire was nearly a year ago.

It’s obviously a creature which likes danger. In the photo it’s teetering on the edge of the windowsill.
