What price the perfect cherry?

A perfect cherry

A perfect cherry

Today we passed our ‘cherry lady’ who was sitting under an umbrella by the back of her car.

She had perfectly ripe cherries for sale, probably the last of the season.

She was sympathetic about our cherry thieves and told me how she and her brother, who owns the orchard, deal with birds.

They hire in a couple of hunters to shoot at them twice a week, even though it’s not the hunting season.

That way some of them are shot and the rest are frightened away.

It works, one has to acknowledge.

I understand your frustration. Perhaps it works, but killing birds for being birds and trying to survive is not a humane option.

There’s no condoning here. The clue is in ‘What price …?’ 😉

When I used to go to a pick your own near where we used to live, he had a sort of canon that fired off every couple of minutes and that scared the birds off without harming them. Our cherries aren’t ripe yet so I have that problem yet to come…

I’d heard of those canons, too, and thought they were effective, but this lady said her brother tried ‘something that’s used at Christmas’ (I presume she meant fireworks) and they didn’t do anything.

She also told me that her own cherries grow too close to a main road for her to be able to get a licence to sell them. On top of that the Carabinieri keep moving her on. It’s obviously not easy being a cherry seller!
