Galileo’s snuffle

Galileo’s head is held still for nostril inspection

Is it an allergy?  Is it pneumonia?  Is it a sweetheart up his nose?

There has to be an explanation for Galileo’s frequent bouts of snuffling and sneezing, and occasional gagging.

The vet has put him on anti-inflammatories and, as an afterthought, antibiotics.

But mostly we have to watch for if his nose starts running, and notice which nostril.

At that point he’ll have to be anaesthetised and the nostril probed in search of a foreign body.

And there could well be something in there, given the way he sniffs along the ground – ‘truffle-hunting’ we call it.

But for now there’s no discharge and the snuffle continues.
