Honey fungus?

The so-called 'walnut tree fungus'

The fungus I found this morning

A couple of acquaintances came by today to say they’d been looking for ‘funghi’ on our hillside, without success. I showed them the specimen I found this morning.

They decapitated it to aid identification, then pointed out a much larger clump that had spread all around the bole of a dead walnut tree.

They seemed divided on whether it was edible or not, but didn’t pick any.

This time of year there’s no need to remain in doubt because you can take your find to a mycology expert and have it checked over free of charge.

My own guess is that this is honey fungus which (while edible) can be extremely damaging to orchards. Unfortunately it’s right next door to one.
