Dolce

The creamy 'dolce'

A portion of the creamy ‘dolce’

Yesterday our neighbour came to collect the bowl from her last culinary gift. At the same time she brought a dish which her daughter had made.

At supper we tucked into it. It’s a variation on the theme of the traditional Italian dessert ‘tiramisu’, which literally means ‘pick me up’.

There are apparently two different explanations for the name ‘tira-mi-su’. The first is that it refers to the effect of the caffeinated ingredients in the dish, espresso and cocoa.

The second is that it’s supposed to be the words uttered by the person who, while eating it, swoons from delight.

I think I like the second explanation best. It gives me a wonderful mental picture of a lady collapsing in ecstasy, hand to her breast and eyes rolled up, as the spoon drops from her mouth.

I didn’t swoon – it’s not the sort of thing I do – but boy! was it good.
