Pollen baskets

Bee with pollen on cupid's dart 2

This bee must have visited quite a number of flowers to have accumulated such a load of pollen.

The pollen doesn’t simply adhere as the bee passes. It actually gathers it with its tongue and puts it in ‘baskets’ (concave areas surrounded by coarse hairs) on its legs.
