Perfect butterfly

A highly privileged photo

Overnight the swallowtail chrysalis I’ve been keeping opened a little slitĀ and a butterfly emerged.

I’d put the open jar in a bucket with a piece of gauze stretched over and I heard the butterfly fluttering in there.

After I took the gauze away completely it sat a while in the bucket then suddenly took off, made one spiral flight by the house, and disappeared through a gap in the trees.

Its markings indicate it’s a female (not Bert at all) which is marginally the more beautiful gender.

It was wonderful to see a butterfly so fresh and new and perfect, with no traces of damage yet to its fragile wings.
