He swam!

Balancing on the rim of the pond

Today was the first time I’ve braved swimming in the outside pool since the middle of May.

As usual, Galileo came to the top of the outside steps to peek at me.

After taking off his bell, I lifted him gently into the water.

There was a bit of panic-stricken scrabbling (with scratches on my chest and arms to prove it) and then, in a flurry of splashes, he was doggy-paddling on his own.

He made for the side, obviously wanting to get out, so I lifted him back onto the outside steps.

But the important thing was – he swam!

I hope we can find him a more suitable place and that it will help to build his confidence.

In the meantime he balances on the edge of any water he can find and fishes out stones and dead leaves with his mouth.

He also dips his head and blows bubbles in his drinking water!

Time warp

I try to spend 15 minutes every day swimming in our indoor pool.

It must be a time warp because 15 minutes in there are not like 15 minutes anywhere else – they’re much longer.

Clive calls out to me every so often how many minutes have passed and I can’t believe how much life has slowed down.

It might have something to do with the fact that my lower arms and lower legs are churning the Bering Sea while my wetsuited torso is snugly in the tropics.

I have plenty of time to think and I come up with all sorts of ideas and solutions to problems.

Unfortunately this is of limited value because by the time I’ve padded into the bathroom like an outsize frog, flayed myself, turned my skin right way out and rinsed it, then got dressed, all my thoughts have flown away.

Praying mantis

The camouflaged praying mantis

On my way back from swimming in the outdoor pool last night, I spotted a praying mantis next to the footpath.

It had camouflaged itself in a plant growing in the gravel.

As I watched, it scarcely stayed still at all. It seemed to be trying different positions, including hanging upside down at one point.

I took a large number of photos. In fact I told Clive it was probably the most-photographed praying mantis ever. But this was the only shot that turned out.

Mysterious disappearance

Yesterday afternoon I came into the house after swimming and left my slip-on sandals in the bedroom while I rinsed my bathing costume in the bathroom basin.

When I came out of the bathroom and went to put my sandals on, only one of them was there.

I looked everywhere – under the bed and under the wardrobe – thinking I must have inadvertently kicked it there, but couldn’t find it.

Kepler – mischief personified

Then I happened to look out of the window and saw Kepler, who’d returned from one of his long forays and was playing with Taylor.

I began to wonder. I retraced my steps outside, and looked the other side of the car. There was my sandal.

Kepler had slipped in through the outside door which I’d left ajar, then the bedroom door which I’d left ajar, spotted my sandal, picked it up without being seen, and slipped out with it like a thief in the night. All just to tease me.

And don’t think I’m anthropomorphising him. You can tell from the look on his face what huge pleasure he gets out of all this.

At least he didn’t take my sandal to the neighbours in exchange for their two and a half pairs of shoes and 6 yellow tennis balls.
