Wild boars
3 a.m. Taylor barking and a loud noise of crunching in the orchard.
I dash out with a torch in my night attire and see dark shadows melting into the greater darkness.
In the morning: a broken pear branch and on the ground, lots of green pears with decisive bites in them.
And a partridge in a pear tree
When I was still at school, I did a big crayon drawing of Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden.
They were eating fruit from a tree, quite peacefully.
There was no snake because this was not the Tree of Knowledge – it was one of the ‘safe’ trees.
But try as I might, I couldn’t stop people asking, “Where’s the snake?”
So this time I’m going to say it myself: “Where’s the partridge?”
The answer is: “It’s not Christmas!”
Anyway, this little tree, overburdened as it is, does look as if it belongs on a Christmas card.
I’m adding a note here, for my much-valued friends and followers, that from the end of this week I’ll no longer be posting regularly on this site.
From August 18th onwards I’ll be doing a daily post with a photo and comments similar to my usual ones on our Self-Publisher website.
Pear year
Pear year – is this a tongue-twister or an eye-twister?
For some reason, the weather seems to have suited the pear trees.
This is probably the best of them but the others aren’t far behind.
Below is a cluster of flowers up close.
Funny little late pears
In September I noticed that one of the pear trees had produced some blossom and I was intrigued as to what would happen.
Well this is the answer: tiny little pears in November.
I wonder if there’ll be a silver nutmeg or a partridge one day?
Pear tree eccentricities
The first photo shows the branch of a very small pear tree.
The tree was determined to grow as many pears as possible on this long, willowy branch and to hang onto them longer than pears on the stronger branches closer to its trunk.
The pears were finally ripe today and I picked them all, so will be able to undo my Heath Robinson branch-support.
Another pear tree, which hasn’t had any fruit this year, has decided to blossom.
This is a photo taken this evening.
I mean, I ask you!
